How Do I Know If My House Has Plumbing Problems?

Discoloured water coming from taps is a sign of plumbing problems

Do you know what to look for to determine if your house has a major plumbing problem? Don’t worry – most people don’t and we definitely don’t expect you to!

At Gladesville Plumbing Services, our experienced tradespeople know exactly what you need to look for so you know when it’s time to call in a plumber. Here are signs of possible plumbing problems to watch for.

Signs of possible plumbing problems

A bad smell

If you notice a disgusting stench like rotten eggs, you’ve got yourself a major plumbing problem. There could be a gas leak, or gases from sewerage are leaking into your house. A leaking sewer pipe can also cause mould and mildew to form inside your house, which causes an ‘off’ smell. These things can make you or your family sick, so call in a plumber to determine what the problem is ASAP.

An unexplained puddle

A puddle in your yard that hasn’t been caused by rain is probably a broken sewer pipe, and you need this fixed pronto. If you notice patches of healthier looking grass, this may be the result of wastewater pouring into your yard.

Brown or yellow water coming from your tap

Discoloured water pouring out of your taps means you probably have corroded pipes. If it is from the hot water tap only, it can indicate a significant problem with your electric hot water system. The colour could be caused by rust in the water – yuck! Time to call in your plumber.

Low water pressure

If all your taps have low water pressure, there could be a leak in your water main or a problem with the water supply. If this is happening alongside other issues, call in your Gladesville plumber to find out the source of the problem and fix it as soon as possible.

Drains aren’t emptying properly

If you have multiple drains that aren’t emptying properly, you could have a blocked sewer line that needs to be drained.

Damaged or discoloured walls

Discoloured spots on your ceilings or walls often mean you have a water leak. You might also notice bubbling paint which could mean a leak behind a wall.

Your water bill is a lot more than it used to be, but you haven’t changed your habits

An unexplained increase in your water bill is probably due to a leak in your system. Call your Gladesville Plumber as soon as possible so they can check for and repair any leaks – it will save you water and money!

What happens if a leak is found?

If your plumber finds a leak, there are several solutions available, including:

  • Structural pipe lining: a new pipe is created within the old one. An epoxy-soaked felt liner is inserted into the pipe, left to cure, and removed. The pipe is then good as new.
  • Pipe bursting: where the pipe is still undamaged enough so that it can be re-lined.
  • Spray lining: the interior of the damaged pipe is sprayed with flexible polymer resin.

These methods may save you money in the long run – but this will depend on the damage sustained to your pipes, and how soon the issue is discovered.
