While a plumbing emergency calls for the services of a reputable plumber, there are steps to take before you make that call. I’m Joe, owner of Gladesville Plumbing, and I have decades of plumbing experience.
In this guide, I’ll provide you with step-by-step instructions on dealing with standard plumbing and gas plumbing emergencies.
You should be prepared for any situation.
What to Do in a Plumbing Emergency
You will probably need a plumber, but there are some other steps you need to take first! It’s important to safely secure your property to prevent further damage.
Step 1
You need to turn the water valve off at the source; this is generally under a sink or near the toilet. The quicker you turn it off, the quicker you prevent a flooding disaster.
Step 2
Your water is already off at the source, but to take extra precautions you should locate the mains. You never know what damage the initial problem created in other pipes, so turning the mains off gives you time to uncover any other leaks.
The water mains in apartments are typically found under a sink, you should check beneath the kitchen sink first. If it isn’t there, look around the laundry area. Some buildings may have a box outside the building with mains for each individual unit.
If you live in a house, the water mains are most likely outside near the front of the property under a council plate.
Turn off the water supply at the mains to ensure all water is cut off.
Step 3
If you have a water leak that is near any electrcial appliances, turn off your power supply at the mains power board.

Step 1
Open the windows to ventilate the property.
Once you have located the source of the gas plumbing emergency, turn it off – only turn the gas source off. Do not touch any electrical switches; it is not safe to do so.
Step 2
Leave the property and ensure everyone else vacates the premises quickly.
Step 3
Call a gas-registered plumbing expert. You can find Joe on 0413 402 599.
You may need to call the emergency services if there is an active gas leak.
